Comparison of Spreadsheet Programs

Microsoft Excel is the king of spreadsheet programs. It is ubiquitous in many office jobs and 99% of finance or accounting departments are completely dependent on it.

Personally, I use it daily in my job and have become quite fond of it; Excel now is my golden hammer, a tool that I like to use for any task it might be remotely suitable for. I run Linux on my private computer and the lack of Excel has been annoying: complex Excel files won't calculate or display correctly in alternative apps and I don't like to re-learn the workflows and keyboard shortcuts (only noobs use the mouse). While it is kind of possible to run Excel in Linux it is not straight-forward most people recommend alternatives like LibreOffice or OnlyOffice instead. So I set out to compare these in detail, with the overall question: "Can this program replace Excel? Do we actually need Excel on Linux?"

I had a closer look at these applications:

I limited this comparison to the best-known Excel alternatives and also excluded all those that are not sufficiently cross-platform (Windows, macOS, Linux). For example, not included in the comparison are:

Here is a test spreadsheet created in Excel that I used to check the compatibility.

So, what's the conclusion?

There's no program that's fully compatible with Excel. The unfortunate summary for Linux users is: if you need full Excel compatibility (to open existing Excel files or share your spreadsheets with others) the best solution is to use the web-based version of Excel or to run it in Wine/Crossover or Winapps/VM. In fact, all of the Excel alternatives have a mediocre to horrible compatibility, especially when it comes to charts and diagrams. The least bad was (to my surprise) WPS Office, which I rarely see recommended anywhere, possibly because it's Chinese and proprietary. The two free and open source options, LibreOffice and OnlyOffice, are both disappointing, but in different ways, with different flaws and incompatibilities, though overall LibreOffice comes out on top when looking at the comparison table above - yet I personally prefer OnlyOffice's user interface. I don't really see a strong reason to prefer Softmaker Office over the competition, but I was impressed by their mobie app which is basically a full-featured port of the desktop app, while all the others just have a spreadsheet viewer with only a few basic editing features.
